In an article by the Huffington Post, they went on record to say, “Black athletes are usually given credit for their “natural athleticism,” while whites are credited for their “hard work,” “discipline,” and “knowledge of the game” (Huffington Post).. The article further goes on to speak on how this helps whites find employment easier because this attributes to their smarts and work ethic and gives them a greater image. Race is groupings of people believed to share common descent based on perceived innate physical similarities (Lecture 3/28/16). Some physical similarities include skin color, head and shape, hair color and texture, shape and size of the nose, eye color and shape, size and shape of the lips, body size, shape musculature, and size…
When sociologists says that race is a social constructions it means that different races come together which can unfortunately affect the other race in life and society. My views on social construction is when the world is filled with so many different ethnicities it makes the world to be a big social gathering. For example, when I Morrisville State College, I was surrounded by a group of different races such as Haitians, Hondurans, Trinidadians, Swedes, Ghanaians, etc. However, I find it very interesting to learn about their culture and traditions. I have a friend that is from Ghana…
As humans, we often like to think of ourselves as masters of our own destiny. As we continue through the routine patterns of life, we see that most of us have the autonomy to decide which foods we eat, which political parties we support, etc. Ultimately, however, we are impacted by forces outside of our immediate control, and often our comprehension. We become elements in social constructionism, the understanding that our beliefs, social institutions, and ourselves are the result of culture and society. It is the basis of sociology, and permeates the entirety of our society.…
One of the most vast and discombobulating subjects our education system teaches us is Geography. When I was younger, about nine or ten, I always had the perception that Geography involved the study of volcanos and thunderstorms. However, as I became older I slowly came to the realization that it embodied a great deal more. At the time I was learning about Geography and I didn't even know it. Through my Social Studies class I learned about the Aboriginal Peoples movements through summer and winter, all the while obtaining the information about why they moved.…
In the early 18th century Australia was colonised by the European settlers. At that time land was claimed ‘terra nullius’, an empty land without an owner, however, the fact was Indigenous people were living here for thousands of years (Prentis, 2011). According to Forsyth (2007) European settlement came with laws and policies that aimed at isolating and regulating the Aboriginal people in Australia (). Racism means separating the people based on their biological appearance mostly based on skin colour which leads the groups to think they are superior to other races (Tatum, 2001, p.102). Tatum (2001, p.103) states racism become ingrained at all levels individual, institutional and cultural.…
First impressions are crucial. They determine what people we will chose to talk to, and, eventually, become friends with; if strangers will feel comfortable coming up and talking to us; or, if pedestrians will cross the street and avoid our looks. In this world, many would say that I was lucky enough to be born “perfect”- I am a white girl who enjoys fashion and high heels. I speak proper English and giggle at uninteresting and stupid jokes. However, is that all that there is to me gathered just by my external looks?…
In 1955, homosexuality was considered a disorder in the DSM1 and many agreed with this thought. The general population held a negative view point against homosexuals, which led to hardships for those individuals. Gay marriage was not legal, discrimination against homosexuals was common, and a heavy stigma surrounded the gay community.2 While some people outside of the gay community supported their lifestyles, the majority did not. Due to this, I will argue that homosexuality was a disorder in the US in 1955. Two theories of disorder support this idea.…
In conclusion, the reproduction of social order sometimes requires much more complex forms of legitimation or justification, and manufacturing consent can be a messy process. My answer for the question “Who benefits from the social order?” is that only humankind benefits from it. Social order is social rules and regulations that guide human behavior, and help us to engage in any form of social life. Also, social order helps maintain the political and economic stance of the country. In my opinion, without the order in society, the social practices and encounters would be chaotic and demoralizing.…
“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads,” Professor Smith said as he viewed his abstract blueprint. “This new community will provide simple transportation for all citizens once they have their license, and it will not require roads since the vehicles will hover over the ground.” “Ok, but where will this new community be, and how will we transfer every human from Earth to there?”…
Societies worldwide are made up of several diverse elements, which are incorporated using different fundamentals frequently in a community. A component that is constantly used within every society is technology. As technology continues to advance, it has found a way to integrate itself in all aspects of life, making it a fundamental tool to utilize regularly. There is a controversial debate on weather or not humans shape technology. This debate has led to the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) approach which is defined as the way the users of technology are the agents of social change rather than the technology itself (Kline and Pinch 1996: 764).…
The tendency to classify what we experience into categories and assign them with labels has always been an universal aspect of the human experience. We create concepts that we may make sense of the complex world around us. This allows us to process information efficiently and quickly, giving our lives order and sense. More than a component of cognition, such categorizations are also an evolutionary defense mechanism that allowed us to feel secure in our knowledge. Because what can be categorized and attached with labels are known and familiar to us, their applications separate what is familiar from what is foreign.…
“Social Constructionism is a theory that explains how things happen. This is the social construction of reality, truth, and meaning that are products of an ongoing social process of experience, interpretation, and institutionalization” (Denton). The social world is not by any means given, natural or completely determined; it is created and conveyed people. Often times people’s interpretation and institutionalization are formed by others. Another person does not know another individual’s thinking/experience however, that person could influence how that individual perceives something.…
In Hacking’s The Social Construction of What? , there were certain guidelines that one must pertain to in order to be considered a social construct. “(1) X need not have existed, or need not be at all as it is X, or X as it is at present, is not determined by nature of things, it is not inevitable. (2) X is quite as bad as it is.…
After visiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) for a global workforce panel, the work of Dr. Douglas Vanderbilt plagued my mind. Dr. Vanderbilt is a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician, who uses the everyday community around him as probable cause in diagnosing his patients. Furthermore, he utilizes the idea that environmental and physical events in life can have an adverse affect on child health. After some research I came to find that the latter is true, and one of the biggest factors that can plague childhood health is socioeconomic status (SES). SES can often affect disease or mortality rates in children through a range of underlying mechanisms, included but not limited to; education, income, and occupation.…
A social construct is the theory of knowledge in sociology and communication theory that examines the development of jointly constructed understandings of the world. Race is considered a social construct because it is an idea reproduced by human thought and interaction rather than something that exists as a material fact of life on earth. One major importance of a social construction is that people rationalize their experience by relating it to other models of the social world. Another major importance is language. Language is essential because this is the way that people are able to communicate their opinions, feelings, and emotions.…
