Which means the United States is more technologically progressive or advanced. If the United States has better technology, then why is China ranked third globally on the Index of cognitive skills, while the US is ranked eleventh? Just imagine a traditional classroom — The “chalk and talk” approach (Donnelly)— like the Chinese prefer. Now, picture a class room in the United States — desks, students, teacher, black board, active board, videos, audio books, laptops, smart phones, online course work, etc. There are many more distractions in the United States classrooms causing students to multitask, which according to Shriky “is cognitively exhausting.” The less distractions in a classroom, the more the students can focus on their work. Clay Shriky is right to ban laptops and smart phones in his classroom. If students are always on their smart phones they don’t learn anything. How do we expect the United States to stay a super power in the future, if the students aren’t absorbing anything now in their lectures? Every teacher should ban smart phones and laptops because if we don’t learn how to control our usage of technology in the classroom, our country will take a dive bomb on the rankings of global education. We also need to have sanctions when it comes to Internet crimes. Right now we have cyber crimes being committed because people believe they are anonymous and can’t get caught. The Internet is a world outside of our own and is growing larger each and every day. If the cyber world isn’t controlled, it will surely take over every aspect of our physical world. Stop Snapchatting and texting. Give the person a call or physically meet up. Stop cyber bullying and threatening. You may not be able to see someone, but they are human and have emotions too. Stop using devices in class when you should be paying attention. We are the ones who shape our culture and our society; it shouldn’t be the other way
