In addition to appropriateness, conversational involvement plays a role in determining overall interpersonal communication competence. Conversational involvement refers to the degree to which the individuals involved in a communicative exchange are mentally and physically engaged in the topic of the conversation (Coker, 1987). Personally, I have a high conversational involvement, scoring 13 out of 15 on the Spitzberg & Cupach assessment. Because of this I would consider conversational involvement to be a strength in regard to my interpersonal communication competence.
