Mark Twain's style is very distinct because of the stylistic elements he uses. One of the main elements he utilizes is Social Commentary. On page 15, Tom tricks his friend Ben by saying, "Like it? Well, I don't see why I oughtn't to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence everyday?" Him saying this causes Ben to want to try it. This quote shows what Twain later describes as a 'great law of human action.' This is Twain commenting on the fact that in order to make a man want something, you must simply make it difficult to obtain. Altogether, this evidence shows how social commentary is a large part of Twain's unique writing style. It is, in fact, one of the main reasons he started writing: to instill lessons of morality and astuteness into his readers.
O. Henry has a unique writing style. In his short stories, O. Henry shows many examples of irony/plot twists. Ransom of the Red Chief is a story about two men who decide to kidnap a boy. However, he treats the men as if they were toys, and drives the men insane, causing them to give the boy back. "I found Bill backed up against the side of it, breathing hard, and the boy threatening to smash him with a rock half as big as a coconut." A style Steinbeck uses in The Pearl is social commentary. Social commentary is when you use social problems that are happening in the society in that person's book. The Pearl is about a family who are poor and live in brush houses. In the book The Pearl, Kino sees that Coyotito was stung by a scorpion and rushes to the doctor however, he doesn't have enough money for the medicine.In the text it states, "The servant took the paper and closed the gate again, but this time he was not gone long. He opened the gate just wide enough to pass the paper back."(pg.11) This relates back to Steinbeck's style because it shows that many people struggle with being poor, so they can't get the things they need. In the book Kino also found a beautiful pearl and thought that he and his family would be rich once he sold it to the pearl buyers, however, the buyers give him an unreasonably low price for the pearl. In the text it states, "I am cheated, Kino cried fiercely. My pearl is not for sale here. I will go, perhaps even to the capital. Now the dealers glanced at one another. They knew they had played too hard; they knew they would be disciplined for their failure, and the man at the desk said quickly, I might go to fifteen hundred.(pg.52) This also relates to Steinbeck's style because it shows how people will try to fix their mistakes when the realize that they are going to get in trouble. They will also sometimes try to persuade the person to
