Personal Narrative: A Career In Early Childhood Education

Improved Essays
During the course of my childhood, I often went through some highs and lows. I was born in Danvers, Mass in 1996. This is a wealthier town just north of Boston. At that time, I had an older sister named Paige, who is currently 22. By the age of two, my parents got a divorce, and my mom moved out of my childhood home. This was the first risk factor. Within the next couple of years, my dad was remarried to a younger woman named Joelle, and they had my half sister Maddie who is presently 13. When I was around 15, I lost all communication with my father because of personal disputes with my step mom. This is when I had my second risk factor. The rocky relationship between my father and I caused me to have internal issues that I still deal with today. …show more content…
This is a crucial time in ones life because they are learning the basics to everything, from adding and subtracting, to how to act within a classroom. This is how I first started contemplating in becoming an elementary school teacher. Throughout time, babysitting my sister, or my three little cousins made me fully realize I was qualified for the job. One of my little cousins has Autism. When working with him, I then realized that I wanted to help children with learning disabilities. It takes patience and understanding, which I have both. Part of babysitting was helping them get their homework done after school. Whenever they did not understand the material, I would find alternative ways to get the material to stick. This brought my little sisters math grade from a D to an A. After the drastic improvements of my sister and cousins, they started to hire me to start tutoring them twice a week. The feeling of this was extremely rewarding because of the improvement I noticed throughout …show more content…
I have dealt with similar age children of that I want to teach in the future. My creative side in working with children will help teach me alternative ways to teach a student new material when they do not understand it at first. I also have worked with various special needs students who have reassured me that I want to go in the field of special education. My approaches in the classroom will definitely reflect my past experiences and knowledge. First, I understand the Bioecoloigcal theory, therefore knowing that children are a pure reflection of their surroundings. For example, if a child is acting up, it could be coming from an issue within his family, peers, school, etc. As well, I understand what it can be like to have disabilities and mental problems within the classroom, so I can be more aware and do that best I can do that will positively influence everyone. An example of this will be doing many hands on activates to keep everyone focused and on track. Overall, I will strive to become the best teacher I can be from all the information I am now learning at school, and from my past experiences that made me who I am

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…
