In my research, I will use two theories to analyze and evaluate academic advising. The social cognitive theory of Albert Bandura focuses on how people motivate themselves to achieve personal goals. In addition, I will be using the developmental academic advising model that focuses on five different elements of the advising process to analyze if first-generation university students are satisfied with the services provided by academic advising programs. The social cognitive theory consists of two important concepts that impact the achievement of goals. This is self-efficacy and self-regulated learning. For this reason, the social cognitive theory applies to academic advising focusing on student learning (Erlich & Russ-Eft, 2011). Additionally, Vuong et al., (2010), state that self-efficacy refers to one’s ability to obtain confidence, in order to control one’s goals. With this idea in mind, Erlich & Russ-Eft (2011), acknowledge that students who successfully recognize and have the ability to create their own academic plans demonstrate strong self-efficacy. The second concept that the social cognitive theory focuses on is self-regulated learning. CSUMB students who utilize the academic advising center and create their individual learning plan acquire self-confidence and build a strong self-efficacy believing in themselves and their abilities.
