Social Cognitive Theory Of Children's Aggression In The Classroom

Social Cognitive theory makes assumptions about learning and the performance of behaviors. These assumptions address the reciprocal interactions among persons, behaviors, and environment; enactive and vicarious learning; the distinction between learning and performance; and the role of self-regulation. Martins and Wilson (Martins & Wilson, 2012) foundational application of the social cognitive theory is represented in their application of modeling throughout their research of the relationship of children’s aggression in the classroom. They examined the effects of exposure to nonphysically aggressive portrayals on television. Program samples used for modeling social aggression were American Idol, Survivor, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

    Research has specifically shown an increase in the number of short-term aggressive behaviours expressed by children who constantly play violent videogames in addition to these children having a greater tendency to imitate these violent behaviours in the real world (Vessey & Lee, 2000).
