But that doesn't mean that slaves and their masters didn't have meaningful relationships with each other. A very important connection in Uncle Tom’s Cabin is Toms and Mr. Shelbys. As an upperclassman Shelby,was it was very uncommon in the era to have such a trustful relationship with between two contradicting classes. The relationship was so strong that Mr. Shelby promised Uncle Tom his freedom when he collects the money to do so. Unfortunately this promise was not able to take effect because of the numerous beatings that Legree laid upon Uncle Tom, which led to the death of the nice humble christian man (p.368). This was not the only relationship that mattered through the book, another important one is George’s with Tom. Imagine back then how cruel masters were to their slaves and did not trust them with anything. Because of this negative way of life we are astonished on how someone like Mr. Shelby trusts Uncle Tom to be accompanied by their only son George. This was not just a one time thing George would go to Tom for everything, and even practiced Toms literary skills. A relationship that was different with Tom and his masters would be for example Dodo and his master Henrique. Although these two characters were not mentioned very often in the novel their relationship can play as an example. Dodo was a very quite servant who did what he was told, but Henrique was not like Mr. Shelby or St. Claire who were patient and understanding, he was very abusive and cruel. This relationship was much different than any of Tom's relations. This example was used to compare the relationships between a “good” master rather than a bad master. To conclude the book Uncle Tom’s death was far from meaningless, because of the loyalness displayed from Tom while working on Shelby's plantation, Shelby granted all of his servants to be free with wagers for Tom’s
