In the book “The Jungle” Sinclair was trying to push socialism. He was also trying to expose the factories that controlled the cities. The main character is Jurgis a Lithuanian immigrant who was looking for a better life so he moved to America with his family. The title of the book ties in with the story and all the characters. Sinclair makes a social class in the book and he puts Jurgis at the bottom. Jurgis encounters a lot of different people throughout out the book. Each character teaches him something new. The quote “I aimed for the public’s heart, and … hit it in the stomach” really explains the whole book. When Jurgis first moved to America he was happy and excited to start a new life. Some of them are good and others bad. Ever since he got there people did not treat him the best. They get even worse through the book. This is weird because Jurgis is a honest hard working man. Once he starts to do bad things is when he starts to gets treated good. The cross section of Chicago are split in two different ways. On one side you have the good people and on the other the bad people. Most of the good people are the honest hard workers that live in poverty. The rich people are the are the bad people because they had to do something bad to get where they are at. The rich people that are bad are at the top of the order of the Jungle. They are the ones that control the cities and factories. The poor are the factory workers. No matter how hard they work they don’t move up in the order of the Jungle. “I aimed for the public’s heart, and … hit it in the stomach” was a quote that Sinclair wrote.
