Social Classes: Corrupt or Family Fixed “The people who take society as an escape from work are putting it to its proper use; but when it becomes the thing worked for it distorts all the relations of life”
( Edith Wharton, the House of Mirth). The author of Romeo and Juliet is of course the late and great William Shakespeare. The play Romeo and Juliet has remained extremely popular throughout the centuries, but strangely, producers in the seventeenth century found it necessary to take great literary license with Shakespeare’s original work. Moreover, Friar Laurence is considered to be in a social class because he is a friar and he serves as a huge help to Romeo throughout the story. To further illustrate, it states that in the story, the friar states, “But I will write again to Mantua, and keep her at my cell till Romeo come; poor living course, closed in a dead man’s tomb” (Act 5 line 5-7). This is also true because the friar tries to help Romeo get to meet Juliet outside of Verona and be together forever. Furthermore, those social classes and the people that serve truly develop and prove the play Romeo and Juliet to be a true masterpiece. In the honorable piece of history Romeo and Juliet, the beautiful fantasy of Verona revolves around the corrupt division of social classes and is demonstrated through the characters. The attitudes Verona’s citizens toward the city’s laws provide a helpful starting point for reflection. The particular laws of a city or political community reflect, to greater and lesser degrees, the more comprehensive understanding of the good of the political community’s good as a whole. This comprehensive understanding of the good of the political community as reflected in its laws also known as the understanding of justice. Also, the Capulets, the nurses, and the friars. Each character in the social classes are important as they help develop the story. The main characters are in the Capulet and Montague families.
