In the novel, the main theme of social class relates directly to my question as it discusses how social class is a common factor that influences one to misperceive others based on their status. After analyzing the character’s beliefs and actions, it seems that only a few of the characters are successful with overcoming prejudice towards others of a different class. By examining the differences in those who do not use social class as a barrier and those who simply find true love without being influenced by financial expectations, it is clear that marriages should not be treated like business transactions. Relating my question back to the novel, Austen demonstrates to readers that social class should not be a barrier between two soul mates as demonstrated by the consequences of Elizabeth’s prejudice and Darcy’s pride. It seems that women shared a fear of having an unstable life as they did not inherit much money and property. Unfortunately, this led them to sacrifice the opportunity to find true love. It is a disappointment that woman did not believe that their choice of marrying for wealth is a cost of their happiness. As this is a classic novel first published long ago in 1813, the process was quite tedious because there were numerous websites to choose from, as my novel was written long ago. It was definitely time-consuming to go through pages of different websites to check which ones are credible sources. Not only that, I found myself more successful with finding websites by bloggers or websites like GradeSaver and Shmoop. Besides the never-ending unreliable websites that should not be used for my annotated bibliographies, browsing the books was also a struggle. Jane Austen is a well-known author that has written many other books such as Sense and Sensibility and Emma. Hence, the books I found were usually not just on Pride and Prejudice. Instead, they were novels comparing all of Austen’s novels, so I had to skim through every novel seeking for direct references to only Pride and Prejudice.
