“All history has been a history of class struggles between dominated classes at various stages of social development” this was a quote made by Friedrich Engels. Social class plays an important role in developing one’s role in society. An individual of a lower social class generally aspires to improve their status through gaining wealth or attaining certain goals in their life. A person in a higher social class is more apt to do everything in their power to hold onto their position, while suppressing and shunning the lower class members. Social class defines how an individual is perceived by the rest of the world. Social class can be improved through love, ambition, and hard work. 1) Frank Cowperwood uses his ambition and manipulation to accomplish his goals and improve his standing in the community. 2) Jay Gatsby launches into the social class of “new money” in order to win over the girl of his dreams. 3) Jim and Ántonia have differing views on their respective places in society. Jim romanticizes about life in the country, but aspires to leave that life in pursuit of success. While Ántonia is perfectly content living out her life on a farm. In The Financier, a novel written by Theodore Dreiser, we are taken through a journey of money and power through the eyes of Frank Cowperwood.
