In 1861, a war disputed inside the borders of the United States between the northern states and the southern states. The cause of the war was over many differential issues between the two regions but the most influential issues was over banishing slavery and federal rights vs. states’ rights. The war lasted from 1861 through 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment got ratified by the states and abolished slavery. During and after war, changes in the economy and social changes started to speculate. The question in regards of the time would be, what were the social and economic changes that progressed from the war in the north and the south?

The economic changes experienced were dramatically worse than the north. The south was a region of agriculture, so they focused on growing commodities such as cotton, wheat, sugar, etc. During the war the Confederate army were in need of many commodities. Shortages of coffee, medicine, clothing, and paper were causing a hyperinflation in the economy. The loss of men fighting for the south, left many farms in lonesome. Since the south was an agricultural land, food was insufficiently farmed. Throughout the war, food was dispersed to feed both civilian and military but only so much was produced. Due to the shortage of supplies in the south, men were forced to bring their own ammunition and guns to the war. In terms of money, the south had extreme small amounts compared to the north. They had lost their banking system, which the headquarters was located in New York, so they held zero gold or silver reserves. As a result, many southern states decided to print paper money, but overall the people decided not to trust printed money, unless it was specifically backed by gold. With no banking system and no gold, the Confederacy decided to print an immense amount of printed money. Although the Confederate Constitution forbid the federal government from imposing taxes on states, it suggested states to be up for decision in taxing citizens.
