My palms are sweaty, there’s butterflies in my stomach, my heart is pounding as if it will soon burst out of my chest. Feelings of being unsafe, failure and constant anxiety. These feelings can only be described as relating to one word. Fear. Fear, to be afraid, has hit every college student. Whether it’s fear of taking Biology with the thought in the back of your mind of, “I might fail”, or fearing you won’t be able to get your degree, college students have felt that sense of fear. Fear can hold a college student back from showing their true potential. I need to not social anxiety about being a college student. Social anxiety is a common disorder that can be found in a college student. Some students may not have the perfect face, and they are fearing of what other students with think of them. I do not have scars from burns, but each start of a new semester there is that small dose of anxiety that kicks in which acts as scars because I am constantly thinking of how other college students are going to view me. Fear can hold us back from showing our true potential. One student might say to themselves, “there are many students here who are smarter than me and I don’t know if I will ever be able to become as smart as they are”. Maggie was known for not having much of an education, while Dee was able to travel to Augusta to receive an education. “She was determined to stare down any disaster in her efforts” (472). Dee wouldn’t let any bit of intimidation get in her way to achieve a goal she wanted. She is determined that if she wants something done, she’ll do it, no matter what pops up in her life.
