People with this disorder are usually diagnosed with schizophrenia, panic disorder, manic-depression, clinical depression, and or personality disorder. Misdiagnosis and not treating anxiety disorders, according to "The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders," a study commissioned by the ADAA, can cost the United States more than $42 billion per year and more the $22.84 billion is linked to the use of healthcare services for symptoms mimicking physical illness. Those with this disorder fear being judged and evaluated negatively by others or behaving in ways that might cause embarrassment. The exposure to such situations provokes anxiety and leads to feeling self-conscious, depressed and anxious. People with social anxiety believe all eyes are on them at all times. People who suffer from social anxiety avoid all situations that cause anxiety as much as they can. The distress, avoidance, or anxious anticipation in social situations interferes with the persons work, school and/or relationships. Those with this disorder know that their fears are unreasonable but cannot shake the feeling. Because the disorder has only been officially recognized in1980 and the problem not being explained until 1987, the definition is not totally accurate.
The causes of social anxiety are unknown. They are still being investigated and researched. However, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, a small structure in the brain called amygdala may be responsible for the symptoms of social anxiety. Social anxiety symptoms include anxiety, blushing, sweating, rapid heartbeats, intense fear, nervousness, or negative thinking cycles.
