This is mainly due to how often social media is used on the internet. According to Pew Research, the majority of time on the internet is used for social networking (How People Spend…). These communal networks like Facebook or Twitter, are realms that commonly promote the development of anxiety disorders (Duong). One disorder that is commonly produced is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD); a condition that makes societal interactions impossible for an individual (Social Anxiety Disorder). This cycle encourages more use to the point an individual cannot sleep. Due to sleep deprivation, a person cannot function accordingly with habitual tasks, such as arriving to class on time. This problem generally applies to youth, however, if the youth cannot break free from the chains of the internet, they will be unable to do so in adulthood (Idrees). Furthermore, according to Larry D. Rosen, a psychology professor at California State University, sleep deprivation can also encourage a decline in academic performance and produce an immune system deficiency (Rosen). An immune system deficiency can exponentially increase the chance of contracting a disease and can cause a disease to become fatal. Because of the lack of sleep, people become unable to perform daily tasks, and they cannot live a healthy life due to medical hardship. Moreover, Rosen further analyzes the physical effects of the addiction, “Sitting around at the computer or on the couch for long periods of time can lead to a loss of exercise, an increased risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, and eye or back strain” (Rosen). When a person consumes the majority of their time sitting in front the computer, the individual does not move, causing the lack of physical activity which can contribute to obesity.
