Growing up and going through puberty and middle and high school is rough. It is said that it is one of the hardest parts of our life. The judgement, the finding yourself, and then there’s going through the “ugly stage”. Braces, glasses, horrible fashion sense and those ugly haircuts we all thought were cute at the time. Imagine going through all of this while being gay. Not only do you face the difficulty that is adolescence, but you face the additional ridicule of being “different”. A lot of times, you are socially out casted, tormented and bullied. I want to analyze the social and economic effects that gay people face in their lifetimes. Many members of the LGBT community grow up facing many hardships. These hardships, pave the way for the …show more content…
According to americanprogress.org, gay and transgender people are 200 percent more likely to smoke some form of tobacco than their heterosexual peers. American Progress also states that, gay men are 9.5 more times more likely to abuse heroin, and are 12.2 times more likely to abuse amphetamines. Also, these same men are 4 times more likely to use marijuana than straight men. Also, americanprogress.org says that, twenty-five percent of gay and transgender people abuse alcohol, compared to 5 to 10 percent of the general population. I think that these number are so high are for two different reasons. The first being the level of stress that they are under. The constant social prejudice (the thought that being gay could somehow be bad), and the discrimination is hard on someone. The constant being told that what you are is a disgrace can destroy a person’s self-esteem. The drugs and alcohol is an outlet, a way to escape from the pain. The second reason, as stated by americanprogress.org, is the fact that many companies target the LGBT community in the bars and clubs where they hangout. These clubs and bars are a staple in the gay community because it’s where they go to hang out with people who are like them and they are usually places where they tend to feel safe. In most of these places, smoking and drinking is highly accessible. I think that is why the number of substance abusers is …show more content…
According to the advocate.com, 20.7 percent of LGBT people living alone, have a gross annual income of 12,000 dollars, compared to non-LGBT people, which is 17 percent. Also, the advocate mentions that, it is reported that in a survey, 62 percent of low-income LGBT New Yorkers, reported that they had difficulty buying a basic need in the last year. I know that no matter your sexual orientation, you face hard times and we all face money issues, but the numbers for gay and lesbian people, is fairly higher than those of heterosexuals. These numbers relate to two main reasons. The first being, that since many LGBT are kicked out of their homes when they are young attributes to the high homeless rates. The low income relates to the fact that many places can decide to not hire you based on sexual orientation. Also, according to the Human Rights Campaign website, LGBT people are 28 percent more likely to drop out of high school. This can attribute the low income due to no education, they are forced to get low paying jobs.
I hope after reading this you will be able to see more of the social and economic effects and their causes that the LGBT community faces. To the social isolation, to the substance abuse, and even the low income. Although the LGBT community has come so far in the last decade or so, it will not ever be okay until we can shed some light on the ever so growing

On the day of the event, I became hesitant in my choice of attending the lecture. I knew what the lecture was scheduled to be about, but I questioned if I would be welcomed to participate, even with it being open to the public. The atmosphere on campus inspired me. Every couple of feet, the NC State emblem is built into the sidewalk with white bricks on a maroon background. Seeing the different ethnicities of students as I walked to the Talley Student Union was different from what I had become accustomed to with working on the campus of a historically black college/university.…

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

The 2011 anti-bullying policy, the Matt Epling Safe School Law, required that every school district develop a policy to address bullying within the school. The law states that schools must ensure bullying is prohibited and have safeguards in place to protect against false reports, as well as the person doing the reporting. The policy must also have appropriate people identified to implement and monitor the procedures, as well as investigate and report (Matt Epling Safe School Law, 2011/2014). The law has very little reach beyond requiring a written policy. There is no requirement in the law for implementation of the policy or the extent to which the policy must be implemented.…

For several years, LGBT people have fought to to earn their equal rights, marked by events such as the Stonewall riots. These people people organized social groups such as the Daughters of Bilitis and the Mattachine Society, fighting to be able to exist in public spaces such as bars and the papers and later on, rights to same-sex marriage and equal job opportunity. The LGBT movement has impacted our society in social and public ways, changing the way we will interact in future years. Before the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis the Stonewall Riots, and the gay Pride parades, no one paid mind to the idea of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, they were rather more worried about racial equality. Since the dawn of man, one fact has remained true to this very day: we are all unique. Upon this earth, the United States of America has always been notorious for its blend of every type of individual imaginable; it is home to nearly 318.9 million people, all of which descend from every crack and crevice of the planet with their own set of traits and characteristics. One unique group in particular has risen like the Phoenix from the ashes of inequality and changed the mindset of society throughout the twentieth and twenty first century, and it continues the fight today; this group is none other than the LGBT community, an assortment of American citizens who identify with a different sexuality or gender than what society has instituted as what…

Throughout the 1900’s there was a lot of things built up against the United States, from WWII to the civil rights movements there was plenty for the citizens and the government to deal with. One important part of this time that people forget is the attacks and discrimination of different homosexual groups within this time. Thus it is believed that the U.S. should have gotten involved in stopping any persecution of homosexual individuals or groups in the 1900’s because, if they had done something then there might not be any of the difficulties and misunderstanding that there is today. One prime example of this was during WWII. Today when the topic of this horrible period is brought up the first thought is that of the thousands of Jews taken,…

We first met many years ago in high school and eventually reconnected when I joined CVS Health in January of 2015. As a consequence, I selected my subject on the gay community and the social impact that this group has had in our contemporary society. Although I’ve previously read the struggles that the LGBT community has consistently endured, I wanted to hear personal experiences from Daniel in order to fully comprehend the magnitude of the situation.…

A current issue in education is the lack of support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students (LGBT). Transgender refers to a person’s gender identify--a person’s innate sense of being male, female, or somewhere in between( Banks& Banks, 2013). School are starting altering these practices: inviting same-sex couples to prom, providing gender neutral or individual bathrooms and locker rooms for transgender student, and including LGBT people and perspectives in the curriculum (McCollum, 2010). With acceptance, this population still face discrimination and prejudice. In school, LGBT students are harassed and bullied.…

It seems so simple to love, that the comfort of attraction lends itself to everyone and that the subtleties of interest are selfsame, by instinct at least; even so, it’s said that we’re conditioned to love, but to me, it’s not that we’re conditioned to it as much as we’re in the condition of its capability, simply being human—to love’s as natural as life itself, as typical as sight or sound, as native as a thought of rationality. Trouble, then, comes about when love we know true doesn’t quite liken the love someone else experiences, from which differences and judgements then arise. This is true of many circumstances, but continues to be true for Americans who identify as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered)—that judgments of them…
