The reformers wanted a society that they could live economically stable in. They wanted the government to pass laws like minimum wages and other things that would help them keep their jobs and feed their families. The lower class reformers were made up of men and women of the working class that we call the urban melting pot that we call America.

Instead of the other two authors who concentrated on the progressive leaders, Connolly focuses on the common man. He thought the progress of this era, was due to America's immigrants. Immigrants at this time were excluded from political office or even any position of power. The reason why he thought it was the immigrants was that there were so many of them and that they all wanted equality. This era of progressiveness helped the italians, jews and the majority of the immigrant population at this time the irish, a chance to establish a leadership within their community. The first author Mowry concentrates on middle class men and women political and community leaders. They are using their political power to bring about social change in America. Huthmacher believed the major players in in this era came from the urban lower class, and by their large numbers brought about social change. The reason why the lower class was such a great part of the Reformation was that they had the most to gain out of it. Connollys thought that reform in this era was spearheaded by the large immigrant population. Through the italian, jewish and irish public leaders brought about more social change than any middle class political leaders.
