Social Acceptance: My Former Basketball Team

Great Essays
Social acceptance is something craved and highly sought after by children and adults alike. The need to feel involved and at peace is something that practically controls our society at it’s current. People jump through hoops to get this feeling for only a minute and I'm no exception. This need to feel normal and fit in makes us feel as though we belong somewhere and apart of something much bigger than ourselves. Like many others my age, I play sports and join clubs to feel involved. My favorite memory of playing sports so far was when my former basketball team, the Bitburg Lady Barons, won Division 2 championships. I remember that day in such detail that it could have happened yesterday.

The day was so cool you could almost see your

All eyes were on the two teams battling for the championship. Calls were made and we fought hard, playing until the very end. Nearly losing our lead against them several times, making the crowd bite their nails in tension and excitement. I watched my eyes glued tightly to the court. The whole crowd was on the edge of their seats, engrossed in the game. I watched as the 5 girls moved fluently and cohesively together, passing and dribbling the ball between them. All making baskets and defending the other team as a whole unit rather than individual players.

I watched the game closely, wedged between another girl on my team and my coach. I focused, paying close attention to any calls made and being sure to cheer on my team. I was completely absorbed in the game when my team mate to my right shook my arm. I spun my head around, my ponytail whipping across my face as I turned to her, glaring. "What?!?" I asked her, curious as to why she was bothering me when I was trying to focus on the intense game unfolding before our eyes. She raised her hand and pointed to the scoreboard, which doubled as the the countdown

My ponytail bouncing as I leapt from my seat, sprinting to the girls who were already in the middle of the court hugging. We'd won! After months of practice, through blood, sweat, and tears, we'd finally won. We had faced down our most fierce competitor and had come out victorious. We swarmed each other, embracing and cheering to ourselves. Whispering about the still fresh victory. Excitement and adrenaline still coursing through our veins, our hearts raced, and the crowd cheered. The other team, so sure that they would win, hung their heads in defeat. Throughout all my years of sports this is my favorite moment.

In that moment and during that season my team was like a second family. Those girls gave me and instilled in me the feeling that all of us long for. We were there for each other throughout the season. They taught me about teamwork, not giving up, and most importantly, the value and importance of hard work and determination. For teaching me these things, they will always hold a special place in my heart. I don’t think i will ever be able to forget how great that season was. The adrenaline, the team, the crowd, if moments could last a lifetime, I would have that day stuck on

This made my involvement a lot better because I could easily engage with them and made doing the sport a whole lot easier. This influences me to take a leadership role and make my participation level very high. In the softball game, the communication was really good because we all knew everyone strength and weakness. Example: When we were fielding in softball I could believe and had the trust that my buddy can get the catch so we could get that person out.…
