Thesis Statement: The organization of youth soccer teams by birth year rather than graduation year, created by “US Soccer” has more downfalls than benefits.
The first reason why youth soccer teams should go by graduation year rather than birth years is because, middle schoolers going into highschool leaves half of a team alone for three months. This time difference (three months) can affect the relationships between the players that are gone to play high school soccer have a weaker relationship with the team. Then that time can also cause the relationships between the players who do not play high school soccer, because they are still in middle have a stronger bond with the coach and other players(stronger relationship). Peak high velocity is when a boy or girl is at their highest peak with fitness.PHV stands for peak high velocity it’s when young men and women go through puberty and start to develop their adult features. ”PHV is the highest point of growth acceleration”(Para. 9 Després). PHV is also how coaches will usual pick out the toughest, quickest, or strongest players by physical means for a team.My friends younger brother tried out for a club called Snohomish United. He’s a smaller kid out of the bunch in his age, but he taller and quicker then most. Coaches will always pick teams by bio-bonding and Bath university writes ”Strength and speed aren 't the only advantages of early puberty. Players are spotted earlier and experience success more often. They receive more support, encouragement and access to coaching and training resources. They also have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels”(Para. 12 Faraway) Coaches will be bio-bonding based off of physical looks of kids. But since they are going by birth year and not graduation year, some kids will have had “extra year” of development even though they were born the same year. This is a big disadvantage for kids who are younger but born in the same year, “The focus on physical ability can also be a disadvantage for early-maturing footballers. Coaches and scouts may believe that early physical advantages will carry on through adulthood. This creates unrealistic expectations for a young player 's potential”(Para.14

Tom Farrey, in chapter 4 of Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of our Children asserts that unstructured play can benefit children in long term athletic competition more than the methods of youth sports today. He argues that the parents of today’s society are pushing children into highly competitive athletics which aren’t even producing results, compared to other countries with different approaches. On page 86 he introduces the French Football Federation in Clairefontaine which is highly esteemed in producing professional soccer players for France. The Federation practices methods similar to the ideas manifested in Dr. Istvan Balyi’s research which finds that long term benefits reap from later exposure to competition in youth…

One theory to explain about the risk or promise of youth football is the Social Learning Theory. Sociologists have tried to understand why people do what they do and one theory to understand people’s thought process is the Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura created the Social Learning Theory and the theory says “ people learn from one another, through observation, imitation, and modeling”(Bandura 1971). This theory will help explain why people have negative or positive attitudes towards youth football. The literature review will place emphasis on the parents, coaches and the athletes’ thoughts on the perception of the sport, and why they like it or not.…

In elementary school, my mom brought me to my first Ole Miss soccer game. As the players warmed up, Hannah Weatherly, an All-American forward, inspected the Mississippi State players like a spider stalking its prey. As the referee’s lips touched the whistle to start the game, the players hustled as if their lives depended on it. Throughout the game, shots were fired; penalties were taken, and tackles were made. The fans throughout the game boasted, “Hotty Toddy!”…

There are soccer programs in counties all over Georgia that need resources and funding in order to teach and foster the youth in its surrounding community. The Atlanta United Foundation (AUF) has a mission to expand the reach and accessibility of soccer for individuals across all counties in Georgia (Atlanta United Foundation, 2018). The problem that arises is which types of populations within the soccer communities in Georgia are most in need of financial assistance from an organization such as AUF in the implementation or modification of a soccer program. Therefore, I will research the question of how demographics such as race and income per county in Georgia correlate with participation in soccer in those counties in order to provide…

“The plasticity - flexibility, in layman's terms - in the brain is greater in a child, and it has more room to swell. So things we see in adult football players are slightly less of a concern in children” (Robertson 1). When kids aren’t allowed to play in their schools football league, they are still going to play anyways. Boys all over the country play tackle football in their yards with each other all the time, it is just a thing kids do. They watch football on the T.V. and want to be just like their favorite player.…

Football, or soccer as it is referred to in a few countries, has arguably become the world's most popular sporting game. In The country of football, all three authors discuss soccer as possibly being a way towards upward mobility. As Fatima Antunes focuses on workers and factories, Gregory Jackson focuses on the professionalization of soccer, and Clement Astruc discusses football as a profession for people of color in Brazil. Then the third reason why going by birth year rather than graduation year is not beneficial for youth soccer because of the emotional toll it has on being with kids that are a year older or younger. It’s a social divide between grades and friends, for example my little sister was born in 2002, and some of the players on her team birth year is 2001. She has to play with the year younger team and not with her friends that are in the same grade as her. It’s emotionally hard when you have been playing with your close friends for years on the same team, and then have to play with the year younger class because you birth years is a year “younger” than your friends. I was born in 1999 and should be playing with some sophomores, when tryouts came…

In discussion of youth sports and the benefits associated, one controversial issue has been improving the developmental benefits while decreasing the risks associated. On the one hand, research provides evidence surrounding the numerous developmental benefits associated with youth sports participation. On the other hand, research provides us with the risks involved with youth sports if certain precautionary measures are not addressed. However, more strict regulations placed on youth practice times and rule changes for competitive games, if implemented correctly, can greatly decrease the risks involved in youth sports and further improve the benefits already associated. Others have even maintained that youth sports, despite the risks involved,…
