Nothing in life goes as planned. I was a sophomore in high school and there were several things that I was sure would happen to me. Obtaining a spot on the junior varsity soccer team was one of them. What I did not know, though, was that it was not going to be as simple as I believed. Unfortunately, I was not able to acquire a spot on the team. Getting cut from the soccer team made me realize several things: I was not as good as I believed, you must work hard/put in the effort in order to be good at something, and it was not the end of the world.
My soccer journey began in the third grade. I had just moved to Oakville and began going to school at Wohlwend Elementary. One day at recess I saw a group of kids playing soccer, so I walked over

After a couple minutes, a boy walked up to me and said, “Hey do you want to be on our team?” and I joined in. A couple days later, the same kid asked me to play on his soccer team, The Dragons. My mom said that was fine and she signed me up. Once I picked up on all of the official rules and attended a few practices, my skills began to improve. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but I became one of the best players on the team. My position was forward, so scoring was my main goal, which I did not have a problem with. Overall, the team was good, and we were victorious a majority of the time. As middle school came to an end, so did my time playing for The Dragons. My summer break consisted of a ton of soccer because I wanted to be prepared for the high school team. The countless hours of practice paid off. I made the freshman team and was on the starting lineup. The first game started our season off great. We won seven to zero and I scored three of the goals. The JV team, varsity team, my friends, and older students were all watching. My team and I received

“Beep Beep Beep” It is 5 am and my hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in my head start telling me that it is too early and too dark to get up. But I did not ask for their opinion, I rise like a phoenix and before I know it, I am drenched in sweat and walking out an empty gym in route to the soccer field. Why you ask because I was told I was not good enough, too uncoordinated, and too tall to play soccer and I was on a mission to prove them wrong. There was a month left before the traveling soccer team that everyone told me I was not good enough to play for came back to town for their yearly tryouts.…

Soccer was something I invested 11 years of my life into, and quitting abruptly put my parents into a frenzy. To my parents this was just another stupid decision, but to me it was the start of my independence. From this day on I began to make choices because I personally wanted to. I stopped caring what my parents thought of me and promised myself to do more for myself. I began excelling in school, not because of the pressure my parents put on me to succeed, but because I knew I could do better if I applied myself.…

Throughout my short life journey, soccer has been an enormous part of my life. I began playing soccer at a young age; this is the point in my life when I fell in love with the sport. There isn’t one thing in particular that I regret doing or not doing. It’s simply my reluctance to go take more risks and go through it, whatever that it may be. And that may seem like a silly thing to say, but in fact, it is true. I always wanted to become really good at soccer, which led my parents to put me into a soccer club. I was decent, even good in some aspects, but I never actually practiced or took the training as seriously as the other kids.…
