Personal Narrative: The Last Penalty

We can’t have penalty kicks, we just can’t I thought to myself. They are the stressful and horrible way to end the game when you can not tie. They make you shake like you are stuck in the Arctic. They make you drenched in your own sticky, salty, sweat. We can not have penalty kicks. We had to score now. “Come on guys,” I said encouragingly, “ We got this.” We were playing for a spot in the finals, the score was zero to zero. Having the ball, we were gaining many opportunities on goal, I had a few of them. We were dominating the whole game, only giving the other team a chance to go up the field on goal kicks, which they rarely got passed us due to the strong defense behind the very skilled offense. I knew picking the shooters would be a harder decision. Everyone had improved so much this year, I knew it would be difficult. We were still talking amongst ourselves about how dirty the other girls were playing and so forth. My coach came over to me and said,” You will be taking a penalty kick, Elizabeth.” I was ecstatic!!! There were three penalty kicks that had to be taken, each by a different person. Finally my coach came to a consensus, I would be taking the penalty kicks along with my two teammates, Morgan and Amelia.

There was time in between to get water and catch our breaths. Our whole team was overly nervous and very upset, the other team was very aggressive and had knocked down a lot of our players shaking them up. “ Don’t let them get to your head ,” she said “ just play your game and you guys will do great.” The ref blew his whistle to indicate to the three shooters and the goalies they had to get on the field. It was time. I lined up with my three other teammates as we got ready to shoot. We decided that I was going to take the last penalty kick, leaving me time to antagonize about my shot. As
