Soccer-Personal Narrative

I can still remember many a moment as my feet pounded across the pitch leaving cleat marks in my wake; these moments are what have shaped me for the many years I’ve been involved in soccer. The game has given me opportunities to teach as a coach, lead as a captain, learn as a player, and grow as a person. Over the eleven years I’ve played soccer, I’ve met some of my best friends and made some of my best memories. The sport has given me a wealth of diverse experiences to learn and grow from. As a captain, I’m a leader among my peers; as a referee, I grow from various work experiences with many diverse people; and as a coach, I share my love for the game get a chance to teach to a new generation of players.
During my freshman year of high school, I was the captain of our freshman team along with my good friend Sam. It was a slow start to the season, but we were able to identify the problems we were experiencing during games and use that to work toward fixing them. We spent countless hours at our practices working and improving our gameplay to turn our team around. We began to win the tough games and move up the standings. It was one of the most satisfying feelings to see us come together and improve as Sam and I directed the team through practices and games.

I learned to work with a variety of people ranging from helpful and intelligent other referees to spectators who are generally rude and disrespectful. I have since furthered my ability to officiate higher level games by upgrading my certification for the first time three years ago, and I will be applying to upgrade even further this fall
