Soccer is a world renowned sport that impacts people in many different ways. This sport has been around for thousands of years and is not going away anytime soon. I got the pleasure of getting to learn and observe the game of soccer as an ethnographer. In order to get a grasp on soccer I observed a practice, a scrimmage, interviewed a player by the name of Katie Spalding and got hands on experience doing learning how play soccer. Katie served as the consultant being that she has had fifteen years of experience with the sport and is on the women’s club team here at Western Carolina. During my research I went in depth to find out everything about the game of soccer that I could. When doing my research I had to clear my head of all of the things …show more content…
Playing soccer is great exercise because of all of the running, and it is also a great way to make or spend time with friends. Most of my best friends I grew up playing soccer with. Playing soccer, or sports in general, is also a great way to build character, learn about sportsmanship and respect, and develop skills that can be transferred to other aspects of life. I’m also a really competitive person, so a soccer field is a good, productive place for me to be competitive. I think competition is good for kids and people in general. I also really like scoring goals. That is one of my favorite things about the game. It’s a great feeling. When I was little (maybe 5), I would cry when the game as over because I couldn’t score anymore. And in general the sport has just had a really big impact on my life. I’ve played it for so long I don’t know what kind of person I would be if I hadn’t started playing soccer 15 years …show more content…
Katie said “I still have every single soccer ball I’ve ever owned. After 15 years they tend to pile up but I don’t want to get rid of them.” All of these soccer balls have a meaning to her and that’s the reason that she still has them because they all have a symbolic meaning to her. Cleats are a good way for people to be able to express their personalities through. Cleats come in different colors and bands and according to Katie she pays attention to how well people take care of them and other players will judge you by them. So if you want to make a good image for yourself in sports you should take care of your equipment. I can totally understand the cultural aspects of soccer because I can relate since I played baseball for thirteen
