Soc 400 Reflection

Improved Essays
SOC 400 has been a very interesting class. I have learned several things from the text as well as from the discussion posts with classmates.

The first thing that really surprised me was the tone in text towards management. From chapter 1’s description of the history of worker exploitation, chapter 3 talking about bullying by supervisors, and chapter 5 talking about work overload among new grads, I thought the text painted a very negative picture of management’s role in the sociology of the workplace. As I am going to school to hopefully be one of those managers in the future, this is rather discouraging to know I will be considered the bad guy of the workplace.

Chapter 3 was the most important chapter as relating to my current work experience.

In the excerpt Cheating in a Bottom-line Economy from his book The Cheating Culture, David Callahan takes a close look at the changing moral values of workers when they are forced to worry about profit over anything else. When upper management puts the pressure of making money on the workers instead of handling it themselves unintended consequences can happen. For many people, work has taken up most of their lives. Most interact with coworkers more than they see their family.…

In David Shiplers The Working Poor: Invisible in America he starts off by stating how often the American lower class citizens are ripped off and treated poorly in modern American business, due in part to their ignorance of labor laws or their spending habits. Chapter two talks mostly in part about the hardest working jobs end up giving the least back to the worker. The most dangerous jobs have the lowest pay and the least benefits, especially when talking about the workers family there is virtually no healthcare benefits in some low wage jobs. These jobs are also time consuming and the workers family doesn’t get half the attention that they need from a parent or loved one. Chapter three talks about how the binding jell of the American economy is the immigrant, legal and illegal.…

After today’s class discussion, I was able to learn new and different ways to take data. It was interesting to see how similar and different recording data can be depending on the goal and disorder. For example, last semester I did not find it as hard to track data for my accent modification client. However, this semester I have changed the way I keep track of data during sessions. My client is working on basic age appropriate sounds mainly because she exhibits a lot of phonological processes.…

Throughout this whole quarter, I would say that I have learned a lot in this class. Not only that I learned what is in the syllabus but also the importance of being able to apply my understandings on a problem. I believe that the instructor did a great job in addressing the learning outcomes in this class by helping us in understanding the concepts that we need to learn in order complete this course. One of the learning outcomes of this course is that each students should be able to describe, interpret and predict the propagation of energy via waves, using applied conservation of energy principles. Before this class, I have learned about the law of conservation of energy in PHYS221 with Micheal Greiner.…

Yes, I found the introduction to align with the conclusion. In the beginning, there was an emphasis on the author's part to compare the differences of factory and college life. Specific details of factory life were described that gave an empathetic tone to the article. He expressed why he worked in the factory and how his time there made him reflect on what his life could have been like if he were not in college. In the end, it was the same message, but he rounded it off with how he valued his time in the factory because he knew he was learning things that he might not learn at college, but would be just as valuable in years to…

Class #1 No readings (yet) Course introduction and overview I am extremely excited about PACS 331 and the content that we are going to cover throughout the term. I’ve always been interested in trauma healing and hope that after the course I will be more knowledgeable about identifying trauma and about how to help those who have experienced or are experiencing it. I personally think that the idea of these journals is a great learning tool. Taking the time to reflect on learning is something that often is tossed aside until dreaded midterms and finals where the lessons are required to be absorbed, usually at a thoughtless and rushed pace.…

Over the course of studying E214 I have thought greatly about my own practice working as an HLTA in a mainstream primary school, where I mainly work with children that experience barriers to learning. These barriers are due to the children having special educational needs or due to having English as an additional language. I now question whether the children I work with are part of a system that has created othering and if through them being othered they included as fully as possible or are they still subject to exclusion through the barriers they experience when accessing the national curriculum or through their progress not being as high as expected by society. (online unit 17) The focus of education appears to be about the grades and progress…

I have discovered the areas that I have been successful in as well as the many areas that I will need to make improvements. For example, prior to this class I had no knowledge of the X and Y theories. Now I realize that I operated with the mindset of a theory X manager and had the same thought process about all employees collectively, which in return made me less effective and resulted in not reaching maximum production. I currently will apply this knowledge to communicate more effectively with my current managers and to better recognize what theory they most resemble and why they interact with me on the level that they do. This class will also assist me greatly in my future goals to own a business in which I possibly will have to manage multiple people in different departments.…
