The story is about the “No Good girl” and Raheem, her boyfriend .In the end she finds out that Raheem is cheating on her, with a “Good girl” that she doesn’t like very much. After she sees them kissing, She decides to act like she has seen nothing. I find this story very interesting. I think Raheem is rude because, he yells at her. He also pulled down on her hoop earring. Another reason is when he asked for $5, he started digging through her purse. Not only that but, but he got more than $5, he got $10. Raheem is a player because, when a “Good Girl” passes by he takes off his sunglasses, and eyes the girl. He also said

In reading world literature, it becomes abundantly clear that the reality of women being subjected to different and sometimes harsh treatment by society is not a regional or even a national truth. It is a theme that is extended from the beginning of time until present day in literary works. While there are many examples of this truth, Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” is exceptionally poignant. Kincaid’s careful use of form and character identities work in perfect tandem to convey the truths of human femininity.…

In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style, a work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the tone of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story. Her take on the characters is a complex mixture of agreement and disapproval.…

At first glance, this short story may not appear to be a short story at all, barely one page in length, “Girl” does not use the traditional format seen in most short stories as it is one long sentence within one large paragraph. The use of this format causes the reader to feel overwhelmed with information. It also creates a feeling of urgency while reading, which in turn causes the reader to read through the story quickly, perhaps missing some information and needing to re-read the short story a second or even third time. In her article, The Rhythm of Reality in the Works of Jamaica Kincaid, scholar Diane Simmons describes Kincaid’s style of writing as “manipulative” in how it how it draws in the reader (467). This style of writing and the feeling the structure of the story gives to the reader is symbolic of the pressures felt by young women as they are told over and over again how to behave within and navigate through…

“Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid is an unusual writing that portrays a mother’s list of rules that her daughter must obey in order to be accepted in society. Having no knowledge about what culture or time period this was, the reader can understand about how a woman must portray herself to the outside world. The reading also concentrates on a variety of issues including gender, social class, and feminist criticism between mother and daughter. Also, the reader can easily identify that the story is about a mother telling her daughter how to become a traditional woman in all of the common things a household wife would do to survive. Overall, the mother expresses a strict relationship by the tone the author portrayed on her towards the daughter,…

Just as she argues how the bad girls are treated she examines how good girls are treated. Tyson emphasizes that “the “good girl” is rewarded for her good behavior by being placed on a pedestal by patriarchal culture” (3). Tysons point is that women who accept their gender role are treated much better and are given the chance that the bad girls are denied.
