After Ko, Yoko, and their mother were off the train the stumbled upon a railroad that crossed a river in the direction they were going. Ko jumped onto the railroad and started walking towards the other side with no problems at all. As Yoko and her mother started to walk on the railroad Yoko struggled. Yoko held onto her mother as hard as she could. As soon as Ko realized that Yoko was struggling she racing back to help Yoko, not paying any attention to the roaring waters beneath her. Ko put Yoko on her back so that there was a less chance of Yoko falling without even a hesitation. A few days after the Korean soldiers died by the bomb and Yoko extremely injured Ko began risking her life stealing crops, corn and tomato, from a Korean man. Yet one day he caught her he excused her of being Japanese and stealing her food, but calmly Ko replied in perfect Korean stating she was Korean and her sister was injured. The Korean man gave Ko a bag corn several tomatoes and let her fill her canteen in his well. Ko was able to supply her family with dinner that day by risking her life lying to the Korean man. Ko was able to put her mother’s and Yoko’s life above her
