Snow Falling On Cedars : Relationship Between Hatsue Imada And Ishmael Chambers

In the book Snow Falling on Cedars, there is a lot of focus on characters and their relationships. Mainly the relationship between Hatsue Imada and Ishmael Chambers. This essay will discuss how the begining of the relationship started, the end of their romantic relationship, how war affected it, and how the murder trial affected. Before the war Ishmael was a somewhat gentle boy with a great friendship with Hatsue, who was a more reserved but thoughtful girl. He and Hatsue both enjoyed the world and nature around them, and spent alot of time together. When they were young, Ishmael taught her to swim, and through a glass box they would look into the sea. Later, when they were looking for the animals living by the beach and picking strawberries for Mr. and Mrs. Nitta, Ishmael began to realize he was in love with Hatsue. At the beach, Ishmael revealed his feeling and he and Hatsue kissed, which made Ishmael feel confident about their relationship, as shown in page 99 's quote:
“But from his point of view, at fourteen years old, their love was entirely unavoidable. It had started on the day they 'd clung to his glass box and kissed in the sea, and now it must go on forever. He felt certain of this. He felt certain Hatsue felt the same way.”
Shortly after this, ishmael and Hatsue began spending a much of their time together in the hollowed out trunk of a large cedar tree. It started with Ishmael following her there, and then they continued to be there together for years.…
