At the end of part one of the novel Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata, Shimaura decides to leave for Tokyo the very next morning after spending the night with Komako. His reason for leaving was purely based on Komako. As Shimamura comes back from his bath, he and Komako get into a little discussion. Komako was to leave and go home and Shimamura calls her out by telling her she is being difficult. From here, he comes to a conclusion Komako is feeling guilty for having a relationship with a traveler; “‘But it's not easy for me. Go on back to Tokyo. It's no easy for me’” (Kawabata 78). Komako has claimed multiple times in the beginning of the story to not have any regrets from this relationship. But it seems as if she is starting to have regrets. …show more content…
Yoko comes rushing into the scene requesting Komako to come back home; “‘come home. Right away. Yukio's worse. Right away’” (Kawabata 81). Yoko has just ran from the inn and came to bring the news to Komako Yuiko is dying. The whole “sad good-bye” mood has just taken a turn for worse. Tension between all three characters rise considerably. Komako shrugs her off and worries Shimaura will not visit again. Yoko becomes anxious and tries to persuade Komako to come home. Yoko becomes desperate and begs Shimamura to let go back home. Shimamura agrees with Yoko and calls a taxi for Komko. Komako becomes furious at Yoko for coming and ruining the moment with news she does not seem to care for. All of this happened because Yukio is dying. He plays the role of foreshadowing: the death of Yoko. His condition is preparing and revealing what they would do when Yoko dies. His presence managed to evoke retching and physical revulsion from Komako. It could be the disgust she has towards him or towards his illness. She was childhood friends with him, how he has taken so much from her. He has done this indirectly. Komako had became a geisha to pay off his bills and now he is dying; wasted effort.
Yoko’s voice plays the role of reality. Her voice brings Komako back to her senses. Komako has been spending much of her time with Shimamura and it has been affecting her life. She goes to him every night and leaves
