My initial impression of SNOMED CT and the associated National Cancer Institute (NCI) website link provided for the assignment brought to my conclusion that this is another complicated healthcare website that contains a bunch of medical jargons and terminology that I probably may never use or have the opportunity to integrate into my practice. According to Stearns & Fuller (2014), SNOMED CT “is not a classification system, but rather, a reference terminology that is designed to represent clinical information through codified concepts that contain a unique code for over 300,000 clinical concepts” (p.70). As I navigate through the NCI website, I was amazed by the amount of useful terms browser displayed on the website including the link for the SNOMEDCT which apparently was easy to locate. I like the fact that the SNOMED CT contains a search box to input any medical term if a coder needs to generate a coded inquiry. The end result is amazing especially with the display of several tabs (such as the terms & properties and synonyms) that contain detailed information on that particular searched term including the clinical terms code and the Metathesaurus Link. Unlike the NCI SNOMED CT website, the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization or simply IHTSDO website contain more textual information which is …show more content…
As emphasized by Rafiel et al (2014) that the development of SNOMED CT is essential in the healthcare setting to better understand the clinical work and associated clinical decisions so as to enhance clinical documentation integrity and quality data
