Sniper Vs Sniper

What would you do if you were in the middle of a civil war? Well, I know two stories where there is a civil war and there are two people in the middle of it. Obviously I believe you wouldn’t know what to do because you are not in their position. These people are two different people with two different conflicts. Each only has two decisions. Let us compare and contrast there relations to each other. The title of the story is “Sniper”. The main character doesn’t have a name but it does say he is a Republican Sniper. The sniper was obviously in the army and was on duty. The conflict of the story was that the sniper was wounded by his opposed enemy. So, it was a hard for the Republican Sniper to kill his opposed enemy. So, he decided to trick …show more content…
The main character is named Songsam. Although he is not in the army, he is a police officer in Korea during the civil war. He finds his friend being arrested. But when he sees this, he is puzzled. So he starts to talk about why he was arrested. But Songsam finds out his friend is innocence. So, he lets him go. I believe the theme of this story is: “Friends stick together even in the bad times.
I do think these stories are different in many ways. But they do have some similarities such as: the plot (civil war) and each had to make hard decisions. But each did have different settings one was held in Korea and the other was in Ireland. In “The Sniper” the main character was related to the opposed enemy, while in “Cranes”, the main character is a childhood friend to the person that was arrested. Finally, the themes are very different in which they had two different conflicts.
Let me ask you again: What would do if you were a sniper/officer and you were in the middle of a civil war? I believe you would have done the same thing that these two people had done in this story. All they knew was that they were doing their job. In that moment of not knowing what to do, you would have only two options? For the “Sniper” you only had a choice of life or death. And for “Cranes” your choices was only to let him go or take him to jail. In those two scenarios, what would you have

War stories are gruesome. They capture the reality of war--death, grief, and pain. “The Sniper” and “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” (by Liam O’Flaherty and Tim O’Brien respectively) are both shining examples of this; unpacking the glorification of victory to reveal how humans are dehumanized and trained to kill other people. Their differences outline a common theme: how war dehumanizes people from killing and guilt, and how that all builds into a catastrophe later on in life.…

The Sniper and Cranes have differences that give two opposite ideas of the story. The main focus of The Sniper targets the civil war and the repercussions that follow it, whereas Cranes focuses on the loyalty one has to family and friends. The Sniper expresses the toll the war has taken on the soldier and how it affects him by giving detail about the feelings and thoughts he has about the war. The author wants the reader to know that the sniper is dedicated to his duty and does not think twice about the decisions he has to make. In Cranes, the opposite occurs; Songsam goes out of his duty and gives Tokchae the chance to escape instead of taking him to be killed, as he volunteered to do in the first place.…
