Snapshot Serengeti Project

What I learned most from this course after Snapshot Serengeti is how to work with people and solve problems, and I also learned how to create different graphics. This is my first science course at the UMN. I think studying for a biology class can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. If you follow a few simple steps, studying for biology will be less stressful and more enjoyable. It’s kind of stress at first, However, I feel better about this class later on, I think nothing is easy when you don’t pay enough attention. I really enjoy the lab portion, because it is hands-on.

In most lab classes, I expected to be self-sufficient in completing the assignments, and I need to understand what is expected of that day. I think part of the skills that a laboratory class is meant to teach is how to work together. However, make sure you understand all parts of the experiment, even if you didn't actually conduct it yourself.

The study at Africa is great, the photograph’s quality is amazing, we can see Zebras munch on dried grass, lion cubs play with their mother, giraffe go for a stroll, and birds hitch a ride on the back of a buffalo. Seeing these photos of the magnificence of life on Earth can only evoke some of that concern for our precious home and its inhabitants. It’s such a great opportunity to experience this project. I think the coolest part is that the public participation, to help sift through the millions of images, the project's researchers enlisted the help of the Zooinverse website, which hosts 'citizen science' projects. Zooniverse helps researchers classify the images by inviting the public to help identify the animals in each photo. I think this is such a clever idea that make citizen scientists to participate in the

His book links to the third and fourth big ideas in the AP Biology curriculum framework, associating closely with learning objectives 3.15, 3.16, 3.17, 4.23, and 4.24 (The College Board, 2015). I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of ways the author chose to present his ideas, and my only complaint is that it was sometimes hard to follow Moalem’s haphazard way of storytelling, which was something akin to the unpredictable swing of…

The experiences in the Biology 230 course will certainly continue to influence me in my understand of and how I approach topics in following biology and science courses. The reason why I say this is that the process that information is taught in the lecture course was a bit different from how some other courses would normally be taught. Comparing this course to previously biology and chemistry courses, this course focuses on the why rather than what is the answer. This certainly helps as it makes up need to find a connection to why some is the way it is, which benefits many of the different topics that are taught through the course.…

All of our lives, we place ourselves higher on the food chain than every other animal out there. Humankind as a whole treats nature far worse than it would ever treat another human being – or so we hope. Throughout the two films, Project Nim ¬- directed by James Marsh - and “The Paw Project” – another documentary that was posted by YouTube user “The Bat Vegan” – we are a witness to harmful treatment done by acclaimed scientists. “The Paw Project” touches on the realities of declawing all types of cats while Project Nim takes us on a journey as a group of hippies tried to humanize a chimpanzee in the seventies. Though they address an overall topic, what makes each of them unique in how they present their information, defend their actions, and draw the audience in to believe any of their actions are warranted?…

Prior to this assignment, I was not familiar with the Buffett Awards. However, after conducting this assignment I regard this award to be one of the most important conservation awards, as it empowers local conservationists that receive ill attention. Overall, I found the Buffett Award assignment to be very challenging, in a positive way, and inspiring. From both regions, all previous Buffett Award winners had achievements that deserved significant recognition even among the most well known conservation biologists. The work performed by these grassroot conservationists has resulted in successful mitigation of wildlife poaching, environmental community education and biodiversity protection efforts, climate change research, and development of sustainable farming techniques, to name a few.…

Imagine a young helpless animal being taken from its home in the wildlife and held in captivity, behind bars and gates, held a prisoner to the world. Each year, thousands of animals are ripped away from their homes and their families and are used for entertainment. Zoos are a popular attraction for kids and adults; it gives people the opportunity to get up close and personal with some their favorite animals. Zoos even allow people to feed and pet the animals, which make zoos very well-liked and enjoyable amongst all the animals’ lovers. What people tend to overlook when visiting these zoos is all the nutritional and emotional deprivation the animals go through each day, nor does anyone know the animal cruelty that goes on when the zoos are closed.…

With the biotic world still being destroyed and harmed at an alarming rate, entire biomes are endangered and whole ecosystems are threatened by anthropogenic pressures. These changes globally have impelled zoos and aquariums to create and establish conservation benefits. This coupled with the growth in economic rationalism and the rise of corporate management, rationalises the feasibility of projects in terms of economic efficiencies. Which has seen the battle between balancing of public entertainment and money with the welfare of animals. It is argued that zoos need to maintain a more concentrated engagement with a range of ethical and pragmatic consideration in the appraisal of animal welfare under the conditions for research.…

Animals need to have access to enrichment activities that allow them to express their natural behavior. These enrichment activities or toys aim to encourage natural behaviours such as hunting, use of scent and hiding food, provide animal welfare by increasing exercise, satisfying ‘behavioural needs’ and stimulating animals, and to promote visitor education so that visitors can gain a better understanding of their natural behaviours and interests. An example of enrichment provided to animals in captivity is the lions. Lions are given ostrich eggs or pumpkin seeds to spark their curiosity, fragrant herbs and oils to excite the senses and specially made toys to encourage natural behaviours such as hunting and stalking. Another animal which receives enrichment is bears.…

The list of soon to be extinct animals is on the rise day by day. On the World Wildlife Fund they have a long list of endangered species. A few of these animals are the orangutan, Asian Elephant, Chimpanzee, Tiger, and Whale (Species List, 2016). These animals that people might be familiar with could soon be gone forever and travelling to a zoo to see them will only be a myth. Current teens will tell their kids one day how chimpanzee’s roamed in zoo’s, how they would see them physically and now they are gone forever.…
