Even though Snapchat didn’t pay a fine but “they agreed not to misrepresent the privacy, security or confidentiality of user’s information, and agreed to implement a privacy program that will be subject to monitoring for 20 years” (WSJ).
Even the big company gets in trouble with FTC regarding their “privacy”. Google is probably the biggest search engine in the world. In 2012, they were charged with a fine of $22.5 million to settle FTC charges because they misrepresented the privacy assurances to Apple’s safari users. FTC discover that Google placed tracking “cookies” and serve targeted ads to those users which violate an earlier settlement between the company and the FTC. According to a survey by The Guardian, “it shows that only 7% of people read the full terms when buying a product or service online, while a fifth say they have suffered from not doing so” (Smithers). Another example regarding the terms and condition is that in 2013, famous rapper Jay-Z, released an app with Samsung and had over half a million who had the app. But many complain about the terms and conditions. Before completely downloading Jay-Z app you have to accept the terms and condition which consists of allowing Jay-Z to access users phone storage, system tools, location, network communication, phone calls, and etc. (Bychawski). When users see this, automatically it’ll scare them because the app is asking for way more information than it should. Naomi Troni, writer of Forbes, went more into detail that the information is now online and accessible to anyone that we give permission to. She also made another good point regarding stores. When you apply for a catalog or a store credit card, they will also have access to your information like address, date of birth, your social security, and also your bank accounts. If these stores security database is not secure and hacked suddenly, all these information will be accessible to the hacker.
