Snapchat, the computing innovation represented by my computation artifact, combines messaging and social media into an app that allows users to capture photos or short videos, add a caption or doodle, and send those edited pictures or videos, called a snap, to their friends. These “snaps” are only available for up to ten seconds before they become inaccessible by the receiver (3). It changed communication with others, not just through simple texts, but through pictures and videos. Among other benefits, Snapchat provides a new perspective in communication. Users make their messages more personal and explore their creativity while sending a message to friends. The simplicity of the app provides the perfect medium to easily share these visual creations. Since Snapchat is available in many different countries throughout the world, it provides people everywhere a way to share their experiences through images (4). After a user takes a picture on a device, that picture is then converted into bits, a combination of ones and zeros, that represent each pixel of the image. Snapchat then sends the bits of the image in packets to the receiver's phone. Snapchat then assembles the image using transmission control protocol (TCP), which provides reliable, ordered, and error free delivery of the packets. On the receiver’s phone, Snapchat then assembles the packets into pixels and the receiver can view the image which self-destructs when a timer runs out. However, privacy concerns have arisen as the app doesn’t have end-to-end encryption and does not provide information to users on the level of encryption they should expect when using the service (1). Snapchat also changed their privacy policy in October of 2015 which allows Snapchat a broader use of photos for marketing campaigns, research purposes, and distribution to business partners. In addition third-party websites such as SnapSaved leaked over 200,000 saved snaps to the world, a direct invasion of the users privacy
