I very much connected to the end of the quote as it demonstrates the two ways in which the Snapchat filters can be interpreted. Aside from being a cure for boredom, filters can make us feel better about our appearance as it gives us the physical attributes that are deemed desirable by society. During my weeks on the app, I noticed my tendency take filtered selfies when I was in need of a “pick-me-up” as I felt the product on Snapchat was better than that of a mirror or regular camera. I actually enjoyed seeing myself with long eyelashes, perfectly contoured skin, and lighter eyes. In fact, I even caught myself searching for greenish-blue coloured contacts online, something I had never even considered before my time on the app. Looking back however, I believe it is disadvantageous for us to justify the use of filters as a way to make ourselves feel more confident. Instead, it seems that filters validate what we fear the most: never being good enough in terms of physical appearance. …show more content…
This feeling is perfectly described by Cherrington (2016) as she writes: “Once you’ve seen how different your face could look, it can be hard to switch back to the regular camera, even a regular mirror, without a moment of slight deflation: ‘You looked better on

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

This is done “by blocking the neural pathways dedicated to evaluating those features” (283). With this new technology being available, people are debating whether or not they should get it, causing a social uproar of people being pro-calliagnosia or anti-calliagnosia. This social uproar brings out the debate of whether beauty should be censored or not. People that are pro-calliagnosia argue that this “treatment” would protect against lookism; “being prejudice against unattractive people” (282). Maria DeSouza, third year student and president of the students for equality everywhere (SEE) say that “People do it without even being taught by anyone, which is bad enough, but instead of combating this tendency, modern society reinforces it.”…

“The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural” (Klein). Many people in this society have been persuaded over the course of 100 years that what makes someone beautiful is how clear their skin is or how clear someone can make their skin appear using cosmetic products. Unconsciously, America has fallen into the belief that clear skin, without acne, and flawless makeup is the constitution for self-confidence and success in life.
