Smurfett Principle Video Analysis

What year is it again? Whether or not you’re up to date on everyday topics most people have heard the issues of sexism. This is 2015 is it not? So how is it that most Hollywood block buster’s today have only one female character? Whether it be transformers, inception, or even the Smurfs viewers are able to see a huge presence of the Smurfett Principle. Proposed by Anita Sarkeesian in her YouTube video she discusses the outweighing and unfair role of male characters in many movies. Through the use of tone, logic, repetition, and finally social appeal Anita Sarkeesian is able to effectively support her argument on the Smurfette Principle. Videos make it much easier to really identify the tone of the speaker and in this video that’s well known. Anita is informed about this topic and she is very upset, however rather than scream into a camera at her audience she takes a much wittier and even humorous approach to keep her readers interested. Anita doesn’t stop there not until watching the video a second time did I notice just how many times she repeats what she is saying which is a very effective tool. I never even noticed in some of my favorite movies that there is usually only one women that appears on screen more than once. That is where Anita decided to play the logos card and appeal to our logical reasoning and in her own words says “hey maybe this whole thing really isn’t that fair considering that half the world’s population is female.” Forget about logic today it is almost hip to stick up for the rights of minorities and the opposite sex. Its subtle but in the video you get a sense that Anita is almost trying to play to that tune that this hole gender and racial inequality does not fly anymore like it did since the dawn of the film
