Smooth Talk Analysis

My first initial thoughts after viewing the film smooth talk was mixed between being very disturbed and confused to feeling major suspense by trying to what the heck was going on in this movie. When Arnold first appeared at her house to see Connie he came off as little too friendly and more suspicious to me. Like Connie his arrival at the house came off as a surprise and very odd. At first Arnold was calm and friendly but his random outbursts of wrath shouting cruel words to his passenger in his corvette. Arnold is very persistent with her telling her that she’s his lover and to come in the car with him that it’s all going to be okay. Even when he hears Connie crying and begging him to go away he still continues to pursue but you think he’s

It is important that nurses are skilled in the art of interpersonal communication. Skill refers to the ability to apply the appropriate behavior in the given context. These skills include being able to encourage patients to communicate, knowing how to pose questions, responding to the replies and giving information. Effective interpersonal communication does not always occur naturally, nor it is easily acquired. Communication has been recognized as a clinical skill that, like all other clinical skills, should be formally taught and developed (Duffy 1998).…

The short story ‘Where Are You Going Where Have You Been’ and the movie ‘Smooth Talk’ both tell the same story of a young girl named Connie. Although there are subtle similarities and differences between the two stories, some of the major differences between the two stories revolve around the relationship that Connie has with her family members and how Connie’s character is portrayed throughout the stories and her interactions with Arnold Friend. In the Story ‘Where Are You Going Where Have You Been’ Connie is portrayed as a typical young rebellious teenage girl who likes to hang out with her friends at the shopping plaza in her free time. In the book Connie’s relationship with her mother is not very good because her mother always speaks of…

That is clearly shown when Arnold makes the comments leading up to the specific one quoted above. Speaking from a psychological standpoint Arnold is a man of talent. He knows just the right words to say to lure Connie into doing just as he wants her to do; “Now, come out through that kitchen to me, honey, and let’s see a smile, try it, you’re a brave, sweet girl and now they’re eating corn and hot dogs cooked to bursting over and outdoor fire, and they don’t know one thing about you and never did and…

The national curriculum in England for Science (2014) intends that pupils should be able ‘to describe associated processes and key characteristics in common language using technical terminology accurately’ (Scholastic, 2013). Children are required to use discussion to work together to enhance their ideas and address any misconceptions they have. Earle and Serret (2015: 119) have put forward ways in which we as teachers can ‘…encourage children to participate in a science-based dialogue’. We must hook them into the lesson using a stimulus like a giant footprint (Earle and Serret, 2015). We must give children time to think and someone to talk to (Earle and Serret, 2015) using think, pair, share for example.…

Not everyone has something positive to make them who they are today. However, every so often it’s more common to have something negative, and so it can push you beyond your own boundaries. The person I am today is because of my big sister Thalia. In “Me Talk Pretty One Day” the narrators influence was his teacher, she was rude to her students just for mispronouncing French and judge her students on what they like on the first day of class and she never changed her attitude during the course of the story, I think she was a negative influence on him. (Sedaris, 635).…

The results of my PRCA-24 were a little surprising but in a good way. I got an 84 which was much higher than I thought it was going to be which I guess reflects on the fact that maybe I don 't give myself as much credit as I should when thinking about my public speaking ability. One of the things the test made me realize is that i’m more nervous in regular life than I am nervous when public speaking, because I thought about the questions if they referred to the circumstances of everyday life. I guess that’s the benefit and downside to being a performer. Watching the video was a little bit strange for me because I’m always perceiving myself differently when I’m up there, which is partly a perspective switch but also sometimes it’s also focusing…

This week’s reading made me introspect about my personal opinions and emotions during crucial conversations. Honestly, I was taken aback when Patterson Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler(2012) discussed we, ourselves are the reason to create emotions that upset us (frustration, anger, fear, and insult). Further, the authors discuss that once these emotions are created we either act on them or be acted on by them (p.104). Last week, I faced a not-so-pleasant situation with one of the certified nursing assistant(CNA) in my facility.…

Sista Talk was a really interesting piece and I enjoyed it. Right from the start I enjoyed reading her “I Am” section because that’s when I realized it is very informal, but by being informal, it is very powerful because you actually get to read what a person feels; we are not introduced with an academic version of this that makes it dull, rather the informality invites us as an audience to feel how she feels. I don’t say the word “love” often, but I loved the way she stated, “…but I am a beautiful Black woman. I am not your hoe your trick your bitch the woman that you continually disrespect in your lyrics but I am a loving.…

The French Feminist criticism approach advocates new ways of thinking and writing for women. French feminists in general believe that Western thought has been based on a systematic repression of women's experience. Among the greatest French feminists who have advocated these ideas are Luce Irigary and Helene Cixous. Cixous argues that one thing that will liberate women's voices, their bodies and their sexuality is that: " Women must write hers self: must write about women and bring women to writing….Women must put herself in to the text – as in to the world and into the history-by her own movement. "(875).…

Communication shares ideas, thoughts and feeling with others. However, effective communication is contingent upon the context in which we live as well as the audience to whom we speak. For instance, communication has a huge role to play in the workplace as managers try to get the best out of employees. As managers soar to top management positions and roles change, many fail to upgrade communication skills. Personally, it is a place of isolation.…
