Why Is Smoking Allowed In Public Places

Smoking has several negative effects on people’s health, not surprisingly. It is one of the major leading causes of death lead by lung diseases, cancer, and heart diseases. Furthermore, it does not only affect smokers, but also others around them, through secondhand smoking. Therefore, it is banned from numerous public places to avoid harming others. However, it is still allowed in other areas, especially in Kuwait. Not considering its various negative effects on others, could lead to serious harm on children and even adults. Several medical studies have proven that smoking in public places is not only harmful for smokers but also for people who are nonsmoker through secondhand smoking (Chaloupka, Yurekli, and Fong 2012). In the past years, many researches have proven all the negative effects scientifically to ban smoking in public places, but on other hand, there are yet many arguments that still support smokers’ side (Russell et al. …show more content…
If we looked back in the history of Western countries, we will notice that they have banned smoking in public areas from long time ago and everyone applied the rule strictly. On the other hand, the failure of trying to apply the same rule in Kuwait, was recognized significantly after having all these public areas allowing smokers to harm others through secondhand smoking. After applying the rule, only a few restaurants were able to strictly follow it and really ban smokers from smoking in doors. However, most local restaurants and coffee shops still have its majority of customers smoking in doors and not respecting the freedom of choice or even the protection of others from such harm. These restaurants yet have a great negative impact on encouraging smokers and their social acceptance as well. Therefore, smoking should be strictly banned from restaurants as well as coffee shops, where smokers would be allowed to smoke in doors and harm others around
