Smoking Is Both Addictive And Harmful To The Human Body

Improved Essays
It is a common knowledge that smoking is both addictive and harmful to the human body (Schoenbaum, 2005). It is a fact that smoking cigarettes is very damaging to the body especially in the respiratory and circulatory system of the body. It is also one of the leading causes of death because of lung cancer and cardio vascular diseases such as heart attacks. Smoking is a habit that often develops during adolescence. Even when teenagers know that smoking is dangerous to their health, they still smoke cigarettes because of the company of friends or other people. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is highly addictive and people who smoke may be smoking because they are already addicted to it. When the body starts to crave, it gets harder to stop smoking. Another contributor is that smokers, especially adolescents, tend to minimize their own risk by convincing themselves that they are not as much at risk as other smokers their age (Milam, Sussman, Ritt-Olson, & Dent, 2000). Most smokers initiate the habit during adolescence usually out of curiosity coupled with the belief that they can quit at any time and thus stop before any real damage occurs (Romer, & Jamieson, 2001).
