For hundreds of years, tobacco has been considered to be the major commodity in the world. Many people find smoking to be an alternative solution to release stress or as temporary, friendly company. Many governments are building hospitals, schools, and other public services from the taxes they impose on the tobacco industry. Despite the benefits, most people know that cigarettes are dangerous, but they do not really understand their harmful effect. Smoking cigarettes should be banned for health reasons. Tobacco has a deadly effect on the smoker’s health for the carcinogenic and poisonous chemicals it contains. When a person buy a pack of cigarettes, he or she might read a warning label on the back that says “smoking might be a cause of cancer,” but no one really cares or thinks of it seriously. According to the American Lung Association, “there are 600 ingredients in a cigarette, and when those ingredients burn, they create 7000 chemicals, 69 of those chemicals are known to be a cause of cancer and are poisonous.” Carbon monoxide is a well-known poisonous chemical. When a smoker inhales this colorless gas, the hemoglobin in the blood will carry it to different organs in the body, with less oxygen carried. The lack of oxygen will cause “decrease in muscles and heart function; it causes fatigue, weakness, and dizziness (Nordqvist).” Therefore, a smoker feels tired and cannot do exercises.
