The ban on smoking on public beaches in America has increased since it started in the 1970s. This is a controversial issue as not all people agree on banning smoking on public beaches, mainly smokers. People that are strongly against smoking on public beaches tend to be parents and non-smokers alike. They find it absolutely unacceptable to smoke on public beaches as they see it as an unhealthy and a harmful habit, and do not want to be around it. Apart from disapproval of non smokers, there are other negative effects of smoking on public beaches. Therefore, smoking should not be allowed on public beaches.

Aside from public parks, public beaches are one place a lot of children go, and can be found either playing in the sand, going for a swim, or just having a picnic along with their parents. This can have a bad impact on children if they see adults smoking on the beach. They might think it is normal and even healthy to smoke, as they are not fully aware of the consequences of smoking yet. Children tend to be easily influenced by what they see around them. Children can pick up the bad habit of smoking, in which can turn into a lifelong addiction. Oftentimes, once someone is addicted to smoking, smoking cessation is almost always a struggle. This is especially true for teenagers since they are easier to become addicted than adults. That is why there are a lot of teen smokers who go under rehabilitation to stop smoking. It is also the responsibility of adults to be proper role models for kids, and children. According to Joe Sanders Jr. et al. in their article “Tobacco Use By Children And Adolescents,” “Young people whose parents smoke are almost twice as likely to smoke cigarettes as those whose parents do not smoke, and the lowest level of cigarette smoking is found among teenagers whose families do not smoke.” That is one reason why adults should be more careful with their actions, as children can imitate their
