Smoking On College Campuses

Although New York State tobacco policy restricts smoking on college campuses and universities including dormitories, residence halls, and other group residential facilities that are owned or operated by such colleges and universities, current policy at colleges varies (State of New York). Some colleges allow smoking in dorm rooms and also within 25 feet surrounding the campus. A survey of 1302 college students among 8 colleges of California about association of campus tobacco policy with second hand smoke exposure, intention to smoke on campus, attitude about outdoor smoking reduction showed fewer students smoked or showed intention to smoke and largely supported restrictions outside the campuses (Fallin, Roditis, & Glantz, 2015).The survey

    Introduction Tobacco use among teenagers and young adults in South Dakota is one of the most important public health issues in the state. The rates of both smoking and smokeless tobacco, known as “chew” or “spit,” in this age group are higher in South Dakota than in the nation.
