I think it is absolutely stunning how many teens in America use tobacco. Most Americans would be shocked to learn the number of our young people who have started down this dangerous path. Smoking as teens encourages them to become full-time, life-long smokers. Whatever the reasons for teens to start smoking, they should be smart enough to know about the dangers tobacco poses to themselves and those around them. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. If people know how dangerous this habit is, why would they even start? The answer to this question is a mystery. One possible answer is that they grow up thinking it is a normal part of life, because that is what they are exposed to from a very young age. The dangers of tobacco use are well known. Of these new smokers, almost 2,000 will become regular smokers. Personally, I think it is criminal behavior to smoke around other people who don’t have a choice in the matter. Almost one-third of deaths from coronary heart disease are attributable to smoking and secondhand smoke. Smoking is linked to about 90% of lung cancer cases in the United States. Breathing is a right all human beings have. We shouldn’t be subjected to toxic chemicals if we choose not to. I don’t understand the illegitimate argument from smokers that they should be allowed to smoke anywhere. They talk about their rights being taken away, but what right is more basic and genuine than the right to breathe clean air? It makes no sense! Why do they think they have the right to play with someone else’s life? Why do they think they should get to negatively affect someone else’s health and get away with it? Their arguments are immoral and factually
