Smoking cigarettes is a way many people cope with the stress of everyday life. While many people started smoking for this very reason, many others began through the temptation of pure pressure. Cigarettes give the ability to deal with stress for many people; but what is the risk? It is not an unknown fact that smoking cigarettes is dangerously connected to various types of cancer such as lung cancer. For many people, it has become an extremely difficult task to quit smoking even while being aware of the dangers it brings to a person’s body. If it is a struggle to get many of the current smokers to quit smoking, why not take the focus back to when most people began to smoke their first cigarette? Another reason that the age should be raised is the status of the current generation. The new generation that are or approaching the age of 18 are vastly different. Smoking may have been something that was extremely common many years ago, but that was also when many people weren’t as aware of the dangers of continuously smoking cigarettes. Many of the teenagers in the new generation may have heard plenty of the dangers of smoking through educational means such as assemblies or even activities such as the Just Say No program. With so many ways to keep the young generation away from tobacco, why does it not work nearly as well as it should?
