All the stories in the film rewind to the past, but always goes back to the importance of the present. In the film they take it back a lot to times while arnold was still in Victor's life, But goes back to the present when it's just him and his mother. It relates to the theme by showing that even with how the past ended up Victor's mother and victor were still able to move forward with the future.
