According to “Smoke Bomb” (2017), smoke bomb is a firework designed to produce smoke when ignited. Smoke bombs are used in various ways such as signalling aircrafts, paintball guns, airsoft guns, military units, self-defence, entertainment and pranks. Smoke bombs was first invented by a British inventor, Robert Yale in 1848. He started by developing a 17th-century Chinese-style fireworks then later on modified the formula so that it could produce more smoke for a longer period of time.
Coloured smoke devices are usually made up of an oxidizer to oxidize other substances, a fuel …show more content…
Some flame and a huge amount of smoke will be liberated from the rapidly burning sugar. The chemical formula of the reaction is described as below:
48KNO3 + 5C12H22O11 → 24K2CO3 + 24N2 + 36CO2 + 55H2O
There are two ways the smoke bombs can be made at home. The first way is as mentioned above in the experiment. The second way involves using celluloid material which is a transparent flammable plastic made in sheets from camphor and nitrocellulose. Nowadays, ping pong balls are commonly used to represent the celluloid. The celluloid or ping pong balls are cut into small pieces and placed inside an aluminium wrapping or canister and are ignited. However, this method is considered to be a health hazard (Smoke Bomb, n.d.).
Our group chose to conduct an experiment on smoke bombs because we were fascinated of how two simple home ingredients which were fertilizers (potassium nitrate) and sugar can result into something so useful in life. Smoke bomb can be used in many ways for safety and artistic purposes. It can be easily done at home as the ingredients can be obtain almost everywhere. By conducting this experiment, we also learnt the importance of chemical reaction in our daily
