According to an Academic Journal from the International Journal of Preventative Medicine, many adolescents are becoming not only dependent on their smartphones but are building up an addiction to them. This can be shown from statistics taken from six Indian studies that most notably show that in the age group 11-24, there was a 72% usage rate of smartphones where 89% used their smartphones on an average day, 92% used it for “text messaging”, and 84% used it for “internet browsing”. These results are substantiating when you take into account that practical smartphones such as the iPhone were only introduced eight years ago in the year 2007 (Apple Reinvents the Phone with iPhone). These results concluded that smartphones “cause a wide range of problems, spanning from abuse to addiction to the device, and affecting work and home life.” This shows how smartphones can be negative to one 's health as they are causing abuse and addiction that is affecting the way people live. People even admit that they are addicted as “60% of UK teens admit that they are highly addicted to their Smartphones” according to the Academic Journal from the International Journal of Preventative Medicine. The advantages are almost endless and smartphones are being used in the United States to do things that would otherwise be hard, inconvenient, or impossible such as getting information about a health condition, doing online banking, looking up real estate, finding information about a job, or getting educational information (U.S. Smartphone Use in 2015). In conclusion, smartphones do more good than bad when it comes to people’s overall health. This is shown through numerous studies and surveys and will continue to be shown as smartphones continue to be the most dominant form of communication in MDC’s. The advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages as shown through these studies. It can be said that the disadvantages are substantial and will continue to be shown as smartphones continue to become more popular, but that doesn’t change the fact that smartphones contribute to people’s overall health positively in common
