The smartphone has taken the world by storm. Users are able to communicate with friends, take pictures on demand, and have the ability to access a vast amount of information via the internet. In fact, many would agree that this technology has become essential to our identity. However, this all-in-one device is causing users to become increasingly sedentary. Some believe that weight gain has become inevitable in our technology-dependent world, but researchers believe it will also provide a solution. Promising studies have shown that the smartphone is among the most valuable weapons in our fight against obesity.

According to Altamimi, Skinner and Nesbitt (2015), childhood obesity is on the rise. In fact, it climbed by a startling 11% between 1980 and 2012. The association between weight gain and increased accessibility of technology is hard to ignore. Video games and television provide children with immediate entertainment, making it increasingly difficult to encourage children to be active. This can be potentially more challenging due to the portability of the smartphone. Altamimi et al. (2015) state that every hour in front of a television or smartphone increases the chance of obesity by 2 percent. Fortunately, it is possible to use this time in front of the screen to encourage the use of health applications.
