People who find more comfort communicating electronically depreciate family, friends, and the world around them for something that they prefer seeing on their smart phones or other electronic devices. Through face-to-face communication a person has the ability to express themselves, while impersonal communication damages ways of expressing tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions. For instance, whenever I would have guests come over my house, my uncle would always be that one person that does not socialize with everyone else. He was constantly on his phone scrolling through Facebook and his text messages without saying a word to all the guests. My uncle would even fall asleep right in front of all the guests and snore after looking at his phone for too long. I was shocked and embarrassed every time this happened and it made me realize the true harm of having a smart phone. People are so into their phones that they lose focus and are unaware of their surroundings. As a licensed driver, I have seen a few accidents where people would cross the street while looking down at their phones without noticing an incoming car headed towards them. One of these accidents happened recently, where the Pokemon Go craze took place on Parkway. It was during the night where there were several people Pokemon Go hunting and crossing streets without looking for cars. I saw a grown man that was playing the game get hit by a car because he walked across the street looking at his phone with his headphones on. It was a shame seeing people so attached to their phone just for a game and get into an accident that could easily have been avoided. He was distracted from the present world, which defines the identity of smart phones as harm to society and people. Over the years, smart phones have proved to be effective in weakening social skills and complete focus from the present world. People may or may not realize it, but they experience such problems with smart phones daily whether it comes to a friend distracted by their phone, procrastination, or even accidents.
