In today’s world, with information overload all around us, parents need to be even more vigilant in monitoring their kids’ time on the internet. Since most teens have smart phones, there are all kinds of possible health risks that can be associated with this easily accessed technology. Perhaps, long term exposure may cause the body to absorb too much radiation that could potentially cause an increased risk of cancer. Electromagnetic radiation is found to be emitted by natural and man made sources. The sun is one of these natural sources, along with manufactured sources including, mobile phones, television and radio broadcasting companies, radar, medical equipment, microwaves, and our own personal devices in our living and work environments. It is difficult to know exactly how much radiation our bodies are absorbing, due to frequency differences and intensity. Some students may have a comment they forgot to add in the discussion and texting allows them to add a comment after school. It can also help students that feel embarrassed or shy to comment in class, and opportunity to enter the discussion (Thomas).
Of course, one downfall of requiring the use of a cell phones in the classroom, is that not all students are able to afford to get one due to economic difficulties. In this case, what would these students do? Would there, perhaps be a program that could help these students get a phone for a cheaper price? Would schools have the extra funds to provide these students a phone to use? These are legitimate questions that may come up if students are required to meet such standards.
In conclusion, it seems that cell phone use amongst teenagers has both good things and bad things associated with it. While there is no clear evidence how much radiation can damage the body, limiting use can minimize risk of damage. Of course, logically, as a parent we would want to protect our kids from excessive use just to be on the safe side. It is a known fact that the position the neck is in when adolescents are texting or on their phones long hours, can cause neck discomfort and headaches and pain going down into the upper back. This should be a cause for
